Goal

Crossing the English Channel in september 2015 for a charity supporting children in need in Brussels

The challenge

With temperatures that would make your fridge jealous, strong streams, oversized supertankers and unfriendly wildlife, crossing the English Channel is far from being a stress-free experience!

In September 2015, we will be swimming the English Channel in a relay style. The crossing starts in England and ends in France. From Dover to Calais, we will be swimming more than 22 miles (35 km) in water with temperatures around 64°F (18°C). To accomplish this objective we will relay every hour in a team of four.

The crossing is regulated and supervised by the Channel Swimming Association (C.S.A.) since 1927. In order to reproduce the same conditions in which Matthew Webb first crossed the channel in 1875, the C.S.A. imposes a number of strict rules:

  • Only the use of a swim suit, a cap and goggles is authorized (no wetsuit, paddles or fins allowed)
  • Team members shall rotate in the same order throughout the swim
  • Each swimmer shall swim for at least one hour each time they enter into the water

The charity

« La Pouponnière » is a charity in Brussels (Belgium) which supports children in need up to 6 years old. It currently hosts 32 children whose physical and emotional needs are threatened by severe family difficulties: unstable, uncaring, neglecting or even abusive parents are among the reasons why these infants are placed in this institution.

Despite public funding sources, « La Pouponnière » exhibits a constant structural deficit. Each year, the institution has to find alternative funding to meet its financial obligations and improve the well-being of the children it hosts.

The money raised will be used to increase the number of field trips organised for the children and to improve the comfort and conditions in which they are living. These elements have a tremendous impact on the children’s development, well-being and social learning.

To finance these projects, « La Pouponnière » needs:

  • To organize sports, music, artistic and cultural activities: $28,000 (€25,000)
  • To refurnish the hallway to improve access and security: $34,000 (€30,000)
  • To convert a terrace into an outside playground: $7,000 (€6,000)
  • To replace the heating system that is no longer compliant with the current norms: $12,000 (€10,000)
  • To refurnish the bathrooms (which date from the construction of the building): $17,000 (€15,000)
